SAE Auckland is thrilled with the news that Auckland is now officially a City of Music, joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network announced today.

Dr Suzette Major, Campus Director as SAE Auckland, says, ‘Music is at the heart of who we are in Auckland, and it’s fantastic to have that recognised in a world forum.’

‘As a tertiary institution who helps forge the creative talent of up and coming audio engineers and musicians the whole SAE team and I are excited by the news that Auckland is now a City of Music.’

Auckland Council says Auckland is home to around half of New Zealand’s creative sector, with more than 18,000 Aucklanders working in the field.  

Auckland is one of 18 UNESCO Cities of Music worldwide. Overall there are 180 cities from 72 countries to be designated as UNESCO Creative Cities. This comes as part of UNESCO’s efforts to foster innovation and creativity as key drivers for a more sustainable and inclusive urban development.

‘While differing geographically, demographically or economically, all Creative Cities commit to develop and exchange innovative best practices to promote creative industries, strengthen participation in cultural life, and integrate culture into sustainable urban development policies.’[1]

Dr Major says, ‘What great news this is for SAE audio students – their passion is championed and celebrated by the city they live in and recognised by the world!’

Dr Major would like to acknowledge that this news is testament to some hard work by the music community and Auckland Council for adopting an arts and cultural strategic plan in 2016, Toi Whῑtiki, designed to promote economic growth in the industry.
