Māngere’s New Zealand Music Month celebration Māngere Love, for the first time this weekend will include the 48hour Music Production Challenge. And, in association with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and 37 Hz, SAE Creative Media Institute proudly announces its support of this inaugural event. The 48hour Music Production Challenge is an exciting development that seems only natural in the bubbling annual hub of creativity that is Māngere Love.

Hot on the heels of last weekend’s 48Hour Film competition, the 48Hour Music Production Challenge will run in a very similar fashion. A call out was made for Music Producers, Beat Makers and Self- Recording artists to come together and test their production and song-writing skills under pressure. There are very limited spaces available for artists or crews with the successful applicants starting the challenge by setting up their own gear at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa Māngere Campus on Thursday 17th May, 9am sharp. All competitors will then be given a specific lyric or theme, open a blank session and make a track from scratch, in 48hours. It may sound daunting but it’s a fun and realistic approach to this industry that is often driven by time constraints and deadlines. 

“SAE is seeing an increasing demand from students wanting to learn music production alongside their audio engineering, it’s a perfect fit” explains SAE Campus Director Dr. Suzette Major

SAE staff will be on-site over the 48hours to offer help alongside professional session musicians, mentors and local producers. There will also be a live-stream Q&A direct from California with bass player and producer Colin Wolfe who has worked with the likes of Dr Dre, TLC and Madonna. 

“When I heard about this event I knew we had to be involved’ explains Dave Johnson, Industry liaison SAE Auckland, “We are a team of passionate music makers, whether we hit drums, play with synthesizers or live inside the box. It’s all about actually making the music. The 48hour challenge is a great idea that we can’t wait to be a part of” 

This is the 9th year that Māngere Love has become the Go-to for locals to come and enjoy New Zealand Music, diverse and inclusive live performances and workshops. The deadline for the challenge is Saturday 19th May at 9am, all works will then be premiered at the Māngere Arts Centre to a live audience at mid day.
