Staff & Students Collaborate on 'The Z-Nail Gang' Feature Film

22 Apr 2015

When a corporate mining giant moves into a small coastal town looking for gold and talking about trickle down wealth - some folk just aren't convinced.  'The Z-Nail Gang' is a film based on awesomely true and crazy events; it’s a comedy celebrating the strength of community.  Nominated for Best Self Funded Feature at the Moa NZ Film Awards and awarded Supreme Winner of the Trustpower Western Bay of Plenty Community Achievement Award, the film was made as a community resourced project last year in Pukehina.

SAE Auckland is proud to have several ties with the film's development - 'The Z-Nail Gang' was directed by the experienced Anton Steel (a member of the SAE Auckland Creative Industry Advisory Committee), and SAE Auckland tutor Marcel Bellve contributed to the soundtrack alongside students Alex, Louis and Anthony from the Bachelor of Recording Arts course.

Under Marcel's supervision, these students worked tirelessly to produce the best possible sound for the scenes they were involved in - whether this meant creating makeshift scaffolding to foley a construction site riot sequence in an SAE studio live room, or working until the early hours of the morning on the thankless editing tasks that come with film making, they were able to put their skills to commercial use and rise to the occasion when the industry came knocking.

Profits from the film will be shared amongst the cast and crew, and the local community organisations who made this unique project happen, so go ahead and support this grassroots film that’s already being described as a “kiwi classic”.
